Hypospadias Surgery Aftercare Guide

• The catheter is usually left to drain into the diaper; a separate bag is not needed.
• Duration varies from 5–14 days depending on the scope of the repair.
• Slight leakage around the catheter can occur; this is expected.
• The catheter should not be pulled or kinked; take care during diaper changes.
• Removal is painless and is done in an outpatient setting.

If a graft was used, a compression dressing is applied over it and left intact for the period your doctor specifies (usually 5–7 days). This is the most critical period for the graft to take.

• If the dressing loosens or becomes soiled on its own, contact your doctor — do not rewrap it yourself.

• Change diapers frequently and keep the area dry.
• Bathing starts with your doctor's permission, usually after the catheter comes out.
• Swelling and bruising are normal and fade over 2–4 weeks.
• Plenty of fluids dilute the urine and reduce stinging.
• Avoid constipation; straining puts pressure on the suture line.

• Catheter blockage, no urine output, or a tense, swollen abdomen.
• Fever or foul-smelling discharge.
• Noticeable or increasing bleeding.
• Swelling that increases instead of going down.
