Hypospadias Surgery • Follow-up and Assessment

Reassessment During Adolescence

The real result of a repair done in childhood only becomes clear during adolescence. The penis grows, tissues change, and details that were not noticeable at a young age become apparent during this period.

  • What changes during this period?: The penis grows; if the repaired channel cannot grow at the same rate, a stricture can appear.
  • What gets evaluated?: Flow rate (uroflowmetry) and the amount of urine left after voiding.
  • Why it should not be missed: A stricture or curvature caught during this period can be resolved with a limited procedure.

What changes during this period?

  • The penis grows; if the repaired channel cannot grow at the same rate, a stricture can appear.
  • A length difference too small to measure at a young age becomes visible as curvature as the child grows.
  • If hair-bearing skin was used in the repair, hormonal stimulation causes hair to start growing inside the channel.
  • Appearance settles into its final form; cosmetic assessment is more accurate during this period.
  • Body image and sexual function come into the conversation.
02

What gets evaluated?

  • Flow rate (uroflowmetry) and the amount of urine left after voiding.
  • Measurement of curvature during erection.
  • Opening width and appearance.
  • Ejaculatory function and, if needed, questions related to fertility.
  • The teenager's own expectations — they should take part in the decision at this age.

Why it should not be missed

A stricture or curvature caught during this period can be resolved with a limited procedure. Interventions done years later, after the bladder has been affected or the tissue has deteriorated further, are far more extensive.

Frequently asked questions
Should we come in even without complaints?
Yes. In this group, some problems progress quietly and the person assumes the situation is normal. A single evaluation during adolescence can prevent much larger procedures later on.
Is correction done before adolescence is complete?
It is, if there is a problem that impairs function. For cosmetic corrections that do not affect function, growth is allowed to finish first; the result is more lasting that way.

With the hypospadias assessment that fits your situation would you like to reach the doctor?

There are two ways. If you'd like the doctor to already know your situation before replying, start with the short assessment; if your question is brief, write to us directly. Both reach the same team.

1 Let me assess my situation firstRecommended The Roadmap asks a few questions in about 2 minutes, collects your answers with an anatomical diagram, and produces a ready-made summary. That summary is added to your WhatsApp message — the doctor replies already knowing your situation. Start the Roadmap
2 I'll write directly Fill in the form; your message opens ready-made in WhatsApp (you can edit it before sending), or you can send it directly by email. This page's topic is added to the message automatically.

Editor's note: Age and a short sentence are enough; you don't need to use medical terms. Please don't send photos — the doctor will request them through a secure channel if needed. What you write is only sent when you submit it; this page does not store anything.
